Allred Releases Statement on Cruz Voting Against Bipartisan Effort to Keep the Government Open

Dallas, TX — Today, Congressman Colin Allred released the following statement on Ted Cruz voting against the 77-19 bipartisan Senate effort to keep the government open, a bill that was supported by his fellow Texan Senator John Cornyn:

“Texas deserves a Senator who will work to make life easier for working families — not more difficult. By being one of just 19 Senators to vote against a bipartisan compromise to keep the government open, Ted Cruz has once again shown us that he would rather score points with his fellow far-right podcasters than work in the interest of everyday Texans.

“If Ted Cruz had his way, funding would immediately come to a halt for everything from health care for Texas veterans to the personnel and resources keeping our border secure from drug smuggling. This extreme partisanship has real-world consequences, and working families in Texas have borne the brunt of Ted Cruz’s political games for too long. We can, and must, replace him next year.”

Earlier today, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor that voting against this bill is “a vote against paying over a billion dollars in salary for Border Patrol and ICE agents, working to track down lethal fentanyl.” Additionally, McConnell said that “letting FEMA’s disaster relief fund dry up is not a productive way to advocate for victims of disasters.”
